The street, then called Madeira Road, had been paved so early motoring events could be staged there.
There were also gardens and lawns roughly where the Yellowave beach sports centre is today, about half way between the Palace Pier and the marina.
The Madeira Lift, now promised restoration, was then fairly new. It took people from the King’s Cliff area down to the seafront through a shelter hall, now Concord 2.
